The New Therapy: Adult Coloring Books

In a previous post, I talked about things that make my soul happy. One of those said things: adult coloring books.

My mother bought me one for Christmas this year. I was ecstatic. I love to color. I cannot draw for the life of me, but I can color with the best of them. My mother told me that these “adult” coloring books are the latest thing. She told me they are meant for reducing stress levels and aiding in focus and concentration. Art therapy, if you will.

Alright, I’ll bite.

Fast forward to a couple of weeks later, I was feeling stressed. Work was busy, life was busy and there were so many things running through my mind I needed a mental break before I gave myself nervous breakdown. I walked into my home office and saw the coloring book and colored pencils sitting on my desk. I figured, why not, let’s give it a shot.

I put my phone away, shut off the computer and television, and sat down at the dining room table. I opened up the box of pencils and spread them out on the table. I flipped through the pages of the coloring book. Some of the pages had intricate drawings, others were simple. I chose a pencil and started to color.

I thought about nothing except what color would compliment the previous one.

I thought of nothing but the “magical garden” blossoming before my very eyes.

For one hour, I thought of nothing.

This concept sounds silly: pretend you are five-years-old again and all of your worries will go away. But, they actually did go away – at least for one hour. I disconnected, recharged and was ready to tackle “reality” with a focused mind.

It’s crazy what a box of colored pencils and a coloring book can do for your soul.

Do you own an “adult” coloring book? Have you tried it yet? What do you think?

  • Ohhhhhhh you know I just love my adult coloring books!!! I also like to print free pages off Pinterest a lot to get a little variety! 🙂

      Great idea!!

  • My roommates and I loved adult coloring books in college. When we were stressed or frantic, we took a break from studying and began coloring. It was so therapeutic, just like you mention. I don’t know why I stopped coloring after college because (to my dismay) life only became more stressful and frantic. This reminds me to get one… I bet Amazon has some great ones for cheap! Shauna’s idea of Pinterest is really awesome too.

Hope you share the final products of your coloring book!
